The landmark event of 1990 was the decision to allow Wrens to serve in combat ships - and by the end of the year the first group had joined the Type 22 frigate HMS Brilliant. 1990 also saw the contract tenders issued for the new Merlin helicopter - and ended with a number of Royal Navy ships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels preparing for conflict in the Middle East.
