1991 was dominated by events in the Middle East, with the Royal Navy playing a major role in the liberation of Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion - and it was RN Lynx helicopters which caused so much damage to the Iraqi fleet. The year also saw the first Type 23 frigate HMS Norfolk undergoing trials, the arrival of the mv Polar Circle - later to be HMS Endurance - and saw British ships involved in the relief effort in Bangladesh after a devastating cyclone killed thousands.
