A theme running through 1993 was the involvement of Royal Navy ships and aircraft in the Bosnia conflict. Helicopter carrier HMS Ocean was ordered in 1993 - but there was a string of announcements which heralded the end of the RNXS, the Upholder submarines, the Type 21 frigates, which were to be sold to Pakistan, the Ton-class minesweepers - and the Women's Royal Naval Service.
