A Royal Navy flotilla flew the White Ensign in dozens of ports in exotic locations during Ocean Wave '97 - and the focus during the year was very much on overseas activities. HMS Liverpool stood by as the island of Montserrat was threatened by volcanic activity, while the staff at NATO Mediterranean headquarters in Naples bucked the trend of recent years by commissioning a new unit - HMS Agrippa. In the Far East, the Navy vacated HMS Tamar shortly before Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule, while back in home waters HMY Britannia made her farewell tour of the United Kingdom.
