1998 saw some significant firsts - including the commissioning of the first RN Merlin helicopter squadron and the first live firing of a Royal navy cruise missile.

A task group headed to the Gulf as tension rose, and a new helicopter carrier HMS Ocean lead a humanitarian rescue mission after Hurricane Mitch devastated Central America.

Navy News also paid tribute to the Royal Yacht in a special supplement recalling her service.
