2002 saw one of the Navy's survey ships, HMS Beagle, saving hundreds of lives when she came across a leaky boat in mid-ocean.
The Royal Marines were in action in Afghanistan, while closer to home the Navy was heavily involved in covering emergency duties during the firefighters' strike.
During the year the end of the Sea Harrier was announced, and HMS Fearless bowed out, while the Navy hosted an Armed Forces tribute to the Queen for her Golden Jubilee.
